Services Provided by Horizons Elementary School

1. Class size is small (8-10) students with a teacher and assistant in each classroom.

2. Instruction is individualized as much as possible to meet the needs of the student while also addressing the requirements of the Standard Course of Study for each grade level.

3. A school-wide behavior plan is in place and is based in five rules. It is a system of monitoring, teaching, privileges, interventions, positive and negative consequences, and feedback that is designed to increase student motivation and promote positive behavioral change. The school staff responds to the choices made by students in a consistent and predictable manner, therefore creating an emotionally and physically safe environment. A daily behavior sheet goes home to be reviewed and signed nightly.

4. Six levels (Pink, Purple, Yellow, Orange, Red, Green) form the basis of a system of privileges in which students earn increasing responsbility and independence.

5. Placement at Horizons is short-term with the student returning to their home school. The average stay is one school year with the decision being made on student progress through the level system. Transition services through mental health are provided with permission from the parents.

6. Mental Health services are available to all students and their families and include individual and family therapy, crisis intervention, and individualized behavior plans when needed.

7. All EC services are provided as required by the IEP.

8. Bus transportation to Horizons is provided with the home school required to assist with supervision and /or a bus and driver if needed.

9. Breakfast and lunch are served in a dining room on campus with the food being prepared by Hudson Elementary.
