Message from the Principal

Baton Elementary School has several goals: to provide a safe environment, to challenge students to reach their potential, and to foster a desire for lifelong learning. We recognize that curriculum should not only reinforce basic academic skills, but also attempt to meet the social, moral, intellectual, physical, and emotional needs of each student. We believe every child should be encouraged to work and think creatively and independently, function cooperatively with others, develop self-discipline, and function as a responsible, productive citizen.

Baton’s enrollment averages 525 – 545 students with 25 regular classrooms in K – 5. We have additional teachers for physical education, music, exceptional children, and art. We have one guidance counselor who coordinates the counseling program and 5th Grade Safety Patrol. Assistants teach art and computer lab. Three secretaries are responsible for office duties. Two custodians care for our facilities. We have 11.5 teacher assistants who work in K – 2 classrooms. Six Child Nutrition Program workers prepare and serve cafeteria meals.

Baton is a Title I school. Four days per week tutors work with small groups of three or four students to improve reading skills in 1st and 2nd Grades.

The PTO is very active. PTO provides volunteers to proctor state tests and assist teachers with daily needs, buys items for specific classroom activities, purchases and helps maintain playground equipment, provides certificates for Awards Day, and sponsors the 5th Grade end-of-year picnic. Many parents participate in fundraisers that allows PTO to budget annually for school needs. PTO sponsors four meetings each year: Open House in the fall, chorus concert in December, Jump Rope program in February, and a talent show in April.

The grounds of the school are beautiful and well maintained. The classroom atmosphere is inviting and focuses on teaching and learning. The school is a source of community pride. We welcome visitors to our school.

Sincerely,
Katie Justice
