Congratulations to the Davenport A+ Battle of the Books team for placing 3rd in the Regional Battle of the Books Competition, a top ranking against 14 district championship teams. Last month, Davenport A+ won the countywide elementary Battle of the Books championship for the 2nd consecutive year, which qualified the 12-member team of students in grades 4-5 to compete at the regional level. After weekly practice rounds, reading requirements on all 17 books, a sleep-in/read-in, and Spring Break, no-break from reading, this group gave it 100 percent for the win. Coach Jen Wilson, 4th grade teacher, says they "really earned a winning title in reading!" | Elementary students from Whitnel Elementary, Valmead Elementary, Davenport +, Lower Creek Elementary, and West Lenoir Elementary School joined their D.A.R.E. teacher, Lenoir Police Officer Scott Kanupp, on a fishing expedition. Students enjoyed fishing at a local pond and, thanks to the support of local businesses and agencies, students wore their Take a Kid Fishing t-shirt on the outing and took home a new fishing pole, but no souvenirs from the pond. The 2nd Annual Take a Kid Fishing event is paired with Take 25, a national campaign that addresses child safety through the Lenoir Police Department. |
