Memorial Day

On Monday, May 25, 2009,  Baton Elementary students and staff paid tribute to the sacrifices of America 's men and women in uniform.  Mrs. Justice welcomed students, staff and guests.  She spoke of the dedication and patriotism of the Americans who unselfishly safeguard our Nation.

With hands over hearts, everyone faced the American flag (from the Navy missile cruiser, USS Wainwright) and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.  Teachers, Sandy Church, Christy Owens, and Toni Vance sang the National Anthem.  Leigh Anne Drum's first grade class sang patriotic songs and 5th grade teacher, Melissa Barr, read a poem entitled, "Memorial Taps".  We observed a moment of silence to honor our fallen veterans and NC State student, David MacCall, played "Taps".

Doris Laws spoke about the families represented and heroes honored on our Baton Memorial Quilt. We would like to extend a special thank you to each person who contributed to its preparation and completion. The quilt will be exhibited in the gym for the remainder of the school year.  In honor of our service men and women, North Catawba Fire Department brought large American flags for display.

Following the memorial, veterans Mr. Wayne Crowe, Mr. David Anders, and Staff Sergeant Brad Eavenson met with students and shared experiences they had in the Armed Forces.

From 1968 -1970, Mr. Crowe served in the United States Army.  In April of 1969 he was presented the Bronze Star of Valor for acts of heroism and bravery during the Vietnam War.  Later he was advanced to the rank of Sergeant.  He spoke with fourth and fifth graders.  He told them all about his time in the army, focusing mainly on his one year tour of duty in Vietnam .  He told about daily life in a combat zone and brought his photos, medals, and other memorabilia.

Mr. Anders served in the United States Navy Submarine Force on submarine patrol ships for 20 years.  Part of his tour of duty was aboard the USS Hammerhead.  This kind of nuclear powered boat was a key element in the underwater deterrent force of the Navy. They were designed to locate all types of enemy ships. During his service Mr. Anders received the Navy Achievement Medal, the Submarine Service and Deterrent Patrol Insignia Pens, the Battle E Award, Sea Service Award and the National Defense Ribbon (to name a few).  Fourth and fifth grades enjoyed his power point presentation about submarines and their differences. Mr. Anders also shared pictures and spoke of personal experiences.
