Math Olympiad

The Math Olympiad program is an international club that involves 4th and 5th grade students from HES. Students meet each week for an hour with 4th grade teachers Allison Brown and Jennifer Baker. Club members explore a topic or strategy in depth and practice for the Math Olympiad contests, using non-routine problems. The highlights for students are the five contests given from November to March. No traveling is required. Instead, we submit contest results to the home office in New York. Students are competing with other schools, other students in our own school, and with themselves. These contests provide an incentive for students to intensify their study of math. The goals of the Math Olympiad program are to:

  • To stimulate enthusiasm and a love for Mathematics
  • To teach major strategies for problem solving
  • To develop Mathematical flexibility in solving problems
  • To strengthen Mathematical intuition
  • To foster Mathematical creativity and ingenuity
  • To provide for the satisfaction, joy, and thrill of meeting challenges
