Dr. Seuss Celebrates His Birthday with Whitnel Students
The National Education Association's Read Across America Day, is a national reading celebration that takes place each year on or near March 2, the Birthday of Dr. Seuss. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, community centers participate by bring together kids teens, and book!
Whitnel was blessed to have a number of readers for Read Across America Day. The readers included our Superintendent, Dr. Steve Stone, a number of school board members, staff from the Education Center, Bussiness from our community, as well as teachers who gave up their planning time to read to the students. We also had many retired teachers. The Kindergarten classes made green eggs and ham, while the first graders made french toast. Yummy!
It has become a wonderful experience for the children as well as the adults that participate in the event. Thanks again to everyone. |

| Whitnel Elementary School Celebrated Red Ribbon week from October 26 - 29. Red Ribbon Week focuses on the prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco use. Each day the students participated in theme and wore a different type of clothing to show that they are saying "no" to drugs (crazy sock day, sports day, etc). This year's main theme was "Keep Your Head in the Game" and we invited some special guest to help us celebrate this special week. |
|
Students in grades 4 - 5 participated in an assembly presented by Mr. Fred Haywood, a survivor of throat cancer as a result of tobacco use. Mr. Haywood talked with students about the prevention of tobacco use and how they can grow up to live healthy lives.
|
| Students in grades PreK - 3 attended an assembly where three of Hibriten High School's star football players Michael, Hunt, and Jonathan, as well as our principal, Mrs. Swanson, reminded students about the dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco and how we can use sports and other activities to stay healthy. Hibriten's "Panther" mascot, South Caldwell High School's Sparky the Spartan, and Hickory Crawdads' Conrad also visited and participated in our school spirit. |
