Art = Visual Language

We studied different fabric structures, like weaving and knitting.
We studied fabrics from around the world and different times.
We learned that people everywhere make fabric for everyday use and for special occasions.

We made these woven fabrics on our two-harness table loom.

Textile Design--Fall 2007
We used a spinning wheel to make our own yarns.
Wool, cotton, silk, and alpaca are fibers that can be spun into yarn.
We used a table loom and our handspun alpaca fleece to make woven scarves and wall hangings.

Ms. LaRue, our student intern from ASU, worked with Ms. Suddreth's kindergarten and Ms. Cournoyer's first grade classes to create a quilt.
We learned about pattern in fabric design.
We gave our quilt to a student in the hospital.
We learned about sharing and caring for others.

The Aztec and Maya Indian priests were excellent astronomers. They kept elaborate records of the night sky and used this information to predict the future. Each day had a religious significance, and the calendar wheel was used to keep track of these days.
